Two of San Diego's most promising performers, surf rockers The Tourmaliners and island pop chanteuse, Kela Sako, are joining forces for a new single and a can't-miss show. The collaboration, released on Pacific Records, features the band backing Sako on two vintage tracks that pay homage to San Diego's rich music history.
The result is a stunning 7-inch red vinyl 45. The A-side features a dreamy cover of Rosie & The Originals' 1960 classic, "Angel Baby," while the flip side offers an equally beautiful rendition of Kyu Sakamoto's 1963 hit, "Sukiyaki."
“Angel Baby" was originally recorded by Rosie and the Originals in 1960, this timeless single was created in a small farming community in San Marcos, California. Lead singer Rosie Hamlin, a mere 15 years old at the time, penned the lyrics for this iconic song when she was just 14. The heartfelt words originated as a poem dedicated to her first boyfriend while she was a student at Mission Bay High School in San Diego, California.
"The Originals,” led by guitarist David Ponci, created magic with their single co-written by Rosie and David. The iconic guitar track was brought to life by Ponci himself, strumming away on a vintage 1955 Fender Telecaster guitar.
Fast forward to today, and that very guitar now rests in the talented hands of Ponci's nephew, Jerry "Hotrod" DeMink, a renowned blues guitarist hailing from San Diego, CA. Jerry's musical prowess doesn't end there; he shares a special place with The Tourmaliners, often gracing their stage as a guest performer.
In a beautiful twist of fate, Jerry added his touch to this version of "Angel Baby," playing rhythm guitar with his uncle's original '55 Telecaster – the exact same guitar that resonated on the original track! Music truly knows no bounds when it comes to family ties and shared legacies.
